Challenges

The challenges facing Hampstead in the next four years as we rebuild our town are unprecedented.

Our infrastructure (roads and sewers) has deteriorated while we were part of Montreal as we did not get our fair share of capital allocations. In fact, we only got about 30% of what we should have received. The result was that over 200 Hampstead homes were flooded this summer. The condition of our roads is obvious. As Mayor, I will take advantage of the current low interest rates and borrow what we need to begin a long overdue program of repairs. In the long run this will be much less expensive than patch up jobs. It will also spare residents the grief of flooded basements.

Over $10,000,000 of our taxes will go to the Agglomeration Council but, barring a change of heart of the Quebec government, we will have no effective say on how the money is spent. The council will be controlled solely by the Mayor of Montreal. My proposals on how to fix this structure have been documented in the Gazette and the Suburban. Henry Aubin of the Gazette has called them the most constructive proposals that he has seen on the subject. As Mayor, I will work with the Mayors of the other 14 demerged suburbs to put pressure on the Quebec government so that we can get the appropriate changes.

Many of our employees will be new to the town. They will also have had four years of experience working under Montreal unions. We need to create a good labor relations climate where employees will be proud to work in Hampstead. With a Ph.D. in Psychology and a business that involves consulting on employee morale issues and Human Resources software, I know what needs to be done to reduce the chances of strikes and work-to-rule campaigns that we have had in the past.

Hampstead needs a Mayor with energy, a real work ethic, determination and fresh ideas. Over the past four years these are the qualities that I used to get our town back. If I am elected Mayor, I will use them to make Hampstead better than ever.
